INDUSTRY GUIDE

Screen protection for retail fleets

Self-checkout, PIN pads, and POS: thousands of public touches a day, wiped with whatever is at hand.

Retail runs the most customer-touched screen fleet in existence: self-checkout lanes, PIN pads, POS registers, and associate handhelds, 12-24 hours a day. Grocery and convenience add moisture and sanitizer wipes; garden centers add sun.

OEM cleaning guidance conflicts with actual practice (Verifone permits only water-dampened microfiber while bleach and quat wipe-downs are routine), and a scratched self-checkout lane looks broken to customers. Sacrificial protection is cheaper than lane glass replacement through OEM service channels.

Protection priorities, ranked

  1. 1

    Abrasion and scratch

Constant wiping plus scratches from rings, belt buckles, and basket edges; a scratched lane reads as broken equipment to customers.

  2. 2

    Cleaning-chemical exposure

Bleach and quat wipe-downs are routine while OEM guidance is restrictive: Verifone permits only water-dampened microfiber with pH-neutral soap. A sacrificial layer absorbs what the panel should not.

  3. 3

    Impact

Cart and basket strikes at self-checkout; tempered-glass protectors are marketed into exactly this failure mode.

  4. 4

    Glare

Skylights and big-box lighting wash out SCO displays; anti-glare finishes are a standard aftermarket SKU.

  5. 5

    Antimicrobial marketing

Heavily marketed but claims-constrained: US public-health claims require EPA registration, and treated articles can only claim to protect the article itself.

  6. 6

    Privacy

Largely irrelevant at lanes; relevant only for manager back-office screens.

Cleaning chemistry your fleet already uses

Device OEMs own the approved-chemical question. These are their published positions; any protection you add has to be specified around them.

  • Elo approves isopropyl alcohol at or under 70%, Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, and Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Wipes on its touchscreens. (Elo approved cleaning agents)
  • Verifone allows only a lightly water-dampened microfiber cloth (optionally with pH-neutral soap) and explicitly forbids solvents, bleach, and direct spray. (Verifone cleaning guidance)
  • Zebra is model-specific: EM approved lists exclude Clorox wipes, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide, while KC50 kiosk documentation allows IPA, diluted bleach, and hydrogen peroxide. (Zebra EM45 approved agents)

Standards: what attaches to what

Nearly every certification in this industry attaches to the tested device, enclosure, or deployment, never to a film applied afterward. We label each one honestly.

PCI PTS / POI

Attaches to: device

The device standard for PIN-entry hardware; approved devices are listed by PCI SSC.

View source

PCI DSS Requirement 9

Attaches to: deployment

Covers physical access and terminal tamper inspection in the cardholder environment.

View source

ADA 2010 Standards 308/309/407

Attaches to: deployment

Reach ranges and activation force for self-service machines; added screen layers must not push touch targets out of reach or require heavier presses.

View source

FIFRA treated-article rule

Attaches to: film material

Caps antimicrobial claims on treated products; a film is never 'PCI certified' either. Both are category errors incumbents routinely make.

Fleet scale and refresh

  • 151,975 US convenience stores (NACS, Dec 2025) and 4.6M US retail establishments under NRF's broad definition. (NACS store count)
  • Roughly 205,000 self-checkout terminals were delivered globally in 2024; POS lifecycle runs 5-7 years. (Datos Insights SCO shipments)
