INDUSTRY GUIDE

Screen protection for parking, transit & kiosks fleets

Unattended 24/7 outdoors: vandalism, graffiti solvents, and UV are the enemies.

Parking pay stations, transit ticket machines, airport check-in kiosks, and self-service terminals run unattended around the clock in the harshest conditions short of industrial washdown: full sun and UV, heat and cold cycles, rain, road salt, and deliberate vandalism.

OEMs answer with 6-8 mm tempered anti-glare glass and IK10 enclosures, but once that glass is scratched or graffiti-marked, operators face full glass replacement on hardware that runs 10+ years. Retrofits and legacy fleets have no film program at all.

Protection priorities, ranked

  1. 1

    Impact and vandalism

Graffiti, keys, and impact are the defining damage mode; kiosk OEMs answer with IK10-rated tempered glass (20 J impact energy per IEC 62262).

    Source: IK10 touchscreen hardware

  2. 2

    Graffiti-chemical resistance

Solvents used to remove marker and paint set the chemistry bar; Flowbird publishes approved graffiti-removal products for its terminals.

    Source: Flowbird graffiti-removal guidance

  3. 3

    Glare and UV

Anti-glare and anti-reflective glass is standard on outdoor units; films must not yellow under full sun.

Source: Outdoor kiosk AG glass practice

  4. 4

    Abrasion

Chronic at airport check-in from baggage carts and luggage.

  5. 5

    Privacy

Shoulder-surfing near PIN entry at pay-on-foot stations.

  6. 6

    Antimicrobial

Niche for transit and airport deployments.

Cleaning chemistry your fleet already uses

Device OEMs own the approved-chemical question. These are their published positions; any protection you add has to be specified around them.

  • Flowbird documents approved graffiti-removal products and Strada maintenance codes; parking garages run wash-down protocols. (Flowbird graffiti-removal guidance)
  • General care is isopropyl alcohol or glass cleaner on protected surfaces; unattended placements get cleaned on janitorial schedules, not after each user.

Standards: what attaches to what

Nearly every certification in this industry attaches to the tested device, enclosure, or deployment, never to a film applied afterward. We label each one honestly.

IEC 62262 (IK07-IK10)

Attaches to: device

Enclosure impact ratings; IK10 is 20 J. The rating belongs to the enclosure or glazing as tested, never to a film.

View source

IEC 60529 (IP54-IP66) / NEMA 250 (4, 4X)

Attaches to: device

Outdoor ingress and hose-down enclosure ratings; NEMA types add corrosion and construction requirements and cannot be converted from IP.

View source

ADA 2010 Standards 308/309

Attaches to: deployment

Reach ranges (15-48 in) and operable-part rules (5 lbf maximum activation) apply to kiosk touchscreens and keypads.

View source

PCI PTS (unattended)

Attaches to: device

The POI standard explicitly covers unattended payment terminals at parking and transit.

Fleet scale and refresh

  • NYC MTA alone runs about 874 OMNY vending machines across 85% of its 472 subway stations; 86% of airports plan self check-in and bag drop; municipal parking terminals commonly run 10+ years. (NYC MTA OMNY rollout)
