What a Screen Protector Can and Cannot Be Certified To

A screen protector cannot be certified to any device, enclosure, or deployment standard: those certifications attach to the assembly a laboratory tested, and a film added afterward is an untested modification of that assembly. The only legitimate film-level tests are material tests, ASTM D3363 pencil hardness, ASTM D4060 Taber abrasion, ASTM G154 UV exposure, and ISO 22196 antimicrobial coupon testing, and each describes a film specimen, never a device rating.

The four tests that legitimately describe a film

  • ASTM D4060 (Taber abrasion): measures coating abrasion resistance as a wear index per 1,000 cycles on a Taber Abraser (astm.org). Numbers are comparable only within identical test conditions.
  • ASTM G154: a practice for fluorescent UV exposure of nonmetallic materials such as plastics, coatings, and adhesives (Q-Lab overview). A “UV tested” claim is only meaningful with the exposure cycle and duration disclosed.

It does not measure impact strength, drop survival, or glass-like hardness, and marketing that implies otherwise is overreading the test.

What does UL listed mean for a screen protector?

Nothing transferable. UL safety certifications such as ANSI/UL 62368-1 attach to a device as constructed and are evaluated by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories at the device level. A film added later is a modification the device certification never covered, so a UL mark on an accessory listing is not a device safety certification.

Is there an ADA-compliant or NSF-approved screen protector?
